#How to Use This Resource
This guide is built to be navigated, not merely read front to back. Its structure rewards the reader who arrives with a problem.
#Find the chapter by its trigger
Every chapter opens with a single Use when line that states, in one sentence, the precise problem the chapter resolves — for example, "Use when employees are searched before leaving and you must decide whether that time is paid." Scan the Table of Contents for the trigger that matches your question; that is your chapter. The triggers are written as conditions, not summaries, so the right module is easy to find and hard to mistake.
#Read the apparatus around the prose
The analysis is surrounded by structured signals:
In the margin you will find numbered side-notes, 1 Like this one — a place for an aside, a nuance, or a citation that would interrupt the main argument. On a narrow screen, tap the number to expand it. which carry asides and nuance without breaking the line of the argument.
#Run the numbers
The doctrines are made concrete by a set of retail calculators — meal-and-rest and PAGA exposure, commissioned rest pay (Vaquero), reporting-time pay (Ward), and a suitable-seating analyzer (Kilby). They are estimation tools for scoping and training, not a substitute for a damages model or legal advice; each states its assumptions on its face.
#Trust, but verify: the authorities and their badges
Every citation links to an entry in the Table of Authorities, and every authority carries a grounding-status badge so you always know how firmly a proposition is sourced:
- verified · full text — checked against the primary source document itself.
- verified · web search — confirmed via authoritative search, full-text check pending.
- grounding pending — identified and being grounded.
Each authority record also states the holding's does-not-hold limits — the guardrails against reading a case for more than it decided. The grounding methodology, and the legal-QA gate behind it, are described in the Methodology.
#Search and cross-reference
Use Search to query every chapter, the front matter, and the authorities at once. Within the text, cross-references link related chapters; follow them. California retail wage law is a web of interacting doctrines — a meal-period violation becomes a wage-statement claim becomes a waiting-time penalty becomes a PAGA action — and the cross-references are the threads.
